Puppy's Choice

About the time of the Great Dog Food Recall, Brandon and I stopped using some form of Nutro Natural Choice dog food. I don't think it was actually part of the recall. We switched because the recall brought up concerns about dog food and ingredients... blah blah blah. I know many of you might think I'm crazy for worrying about what ingredients are in my dog's food, but if you had to deal with the soft stools and the horrendous gas, occasional vomiting and the possible allergies (which causes Finny to lick and lick his little paws all day long), you might rethink your dog food too.

We did some research and with a lot of help from the other boston terrier owners at Woof Board...we made the gradual change to Canidae All-Stages dog food. For a while, things were great. The stools hardened and became less frequent and the gas came to a halt. I was happy with the food change.

Eventually, we noticed that the boys weren't eating their food every day - Finnegan especially. Finnegan's gas got worse... like to the point where we were just waiting for the diarrhea explosion because his ass smelled so rank. Their stools are still firm... but we feel we can do better.

After reading Colleen's blog about her dog Rocco's taste test, I thought, why not?

Today, after yummy pastries and coffee at a little Austrian bakery, we walked over to the hippy-crunchy dog store to inquire about food. They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable.. asking all the right questions. In the end, we walked away with samples of dog food - one chicken, one lamb.

The results were not quite as definitive as Rocco's, as both dogs chowed down on both foods almost equally. Finnegan did show more interest in the Chicken though... so we are going with that.

Thor was upset because we did it one at a time...

Finny clearly favored the chicken over the lamb.

Thor finally got his turn, chowing down on which ever bowl he happened to spot first... that's my leetle piggy.

Finnegan's thinking, "You best not ef up my decision bruddah Thor! Don't make me eat dat lambz forevahz."

IMG_8068
Thor proved to be the equal opportunity dog food taster...he didn't discriminate.

After all that decision making, they were finally able to relax in the sun with some tasty, free-range bully sticks

FYI - we went with California Natural Chicken and Rice... you can read about it here.

Have you tried the refrigerated dog food? We tried that once and the dogs really liked it. They are both good with their regular food, so we didn't switch to it, but they were fans. It is made by Freshpet. Watch out though, we didn't seal it up well enough and it made the fridge smell.

Oh man, do Bostons have bad gas. We were blessed with Betty's first diarhhea today. Ack!

We are feeding her Eukanuna - so far so good.

Adorable. I just feed my pug Science Diet. Thats what the vet recommended.

Sadly, the good food I feed my cats doesn't make them puke everywhere. It's when they decide to eat clumps of their own hair.

To which I tell them, "if you choose to eat your own hair, then I can't feel sorry for you when you puke."

A BT named Thor slays me!

What would you have done if they didn't agree?

We feed California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato mixed 50/50 with Orijen Fish! Yum, yum, yum. We have a chicken allergy at our house (Tino) so we have to go with a non-chicken source and good quality grains. I hope your puppers do well on the new food!

YEAH for the food taste test!! :-) It made me feel so good to feed Rocco something HE chose... not me. But unfortunately we may be changing his food ah-gain. He throws up once a week (has been since a pup) and the dr thinks it might be a food intolerance issue... since he's been on lamb and rice for so long. So we may be switching to chicken. Looks like we'll have a whole 'nother round of taste testing... this time with only chicken. Last time is was only lamb.

Yeah for Thor and Finn finding something they like!!

Maybe they need their anal glands expressed? ;) I worked at a vet's office for over a year so I'm always trying to help people with their puppy problems.

hope your babies start feeling better

ugh anal glands lol.. we had a really old poodle who had "glandular" issues. bleh. haha

This sounds like a really good idea though. My dogs eat the Nutro Natural Choice, and our vet says if they like that, then that is a good kind, but they are fairly issue-free dogs. I can understand your dog food concerns with the symptoms your dogs have. I hope this new food improves the "doody" issues.

(Also if it helps, the paw licking can be a form of OCD and not just allergies. Esp. if your dogs lick the carpet as well. My scottie's issue: OCD in the form of licking carpet and fanatically watching the trees in our backyard for birds/squirrels)

Lucky puppies! Their mommy loves them so much that she's giving them a little taste test (how swanky!)-- I hope they appreciated it and gave you lots of kisses! And I hope you find the best food for them-- no more stinky toots! haha. Good luck!

Did changing food help with the foot licking? My yorkie is a foot licking fool and the sound makes my skin crawl!

Love that store (so does Kharma)! All their foods are good although we toggle between Timberwolf Organics and Innova with great results.
